Using Puppets and Masks to Enhance Self-Expression

This course is for anyone working in the ‘helping’ professions who are facilitating others who are in distress, in life changing circumstances or in the pursuit of self-understanding.

From Shaman to Self
The course is highly experiential and exciting as for centuries Masks have been used, not only in cultural rituals by Holy Elders, Priests, Priestesses and Shaman, but also during the day-to-day life of the ‘common people’ and you will explore this historical backdrop in ‘the here and now’. You will also explore how Masks were and are made, make your own Masks and discover how the use of Masks can facilitate your own self-awareness.
In addition those of you who are working with others will learn how Masks can assist your clients in reaching deeper levels self-awareness using this ancient ritualistic and healing art.

Puppets: From Projection to Greater Self-awareness.
As part of a story making process Puppets can safely offer you an insight into your ‘hidden world’ for they are the potential vehicle through which your story can be told metaphorically.
The use of Puppets also offers your clients the opportunity to explore their inner most thoughts and feelings in a far less painful and scary way.
The course will also explore the basic theory which underpins our understanding of metaphor and projection in therapy and self-awareness facilitation. In addition the course also seeks to examine how certain ‘structures’ enable and enhance the process of self-awareness to unfold.
Puppets used as metaphorical tools are especially helpful to clients who have endured or are enduring severe trauma; survivors of abuse, those who self-harm and clients with eating disorders.

Abuse in Childhood

This residential weekend workshop is a group experience facilitated in safe and confidential surroundings. The group will concentrate on building trust and set a contract which the group itself will design.

This is a group experience facilitated in safe and confidential surroundings. The experience begins on a Friday evening with a meal followed by the 1st session of group work which will concentrate on building trust within the group and setting the working contract for the weekend; which the group itself will design and agree.

We aim for the weekend to be an intense shared journey of self-discovery and liberation for the participants. We also aim to facilitate the group to act as a cohesive, supportive unit in which each member is given the time and space she/he needs to safely explore their most painful experiences.

The facilitators believe that breaking the secrecy which often surrounds childhood abuse is vital to the healing process of the individual who has experienced the abuse; therefore the group will act as witness to each individual’s experience. However, it can be extremely difficult to put into words and explain events and the ‘body’ is often despised. Therefore, the exercises used during the weekend will help participants to both find their voice, access and free ‘body memory’.

Participants will be supportively encouraged to engage in all aspects and exercises during the weekend but no one will be forced to participate in anything they would rather not do.

Who is the workshop for?

  • Individuals and/or Professionals
  • Anyone who wishes to understand, work on or with others releasing their experiences of childhood abuse; this focuses for most participants on the experience of sexual abuse, however, other abuses also figure largely in the group work.

The workshop will count toward CPD requirements for professionals but this is achieved through self-development work; the full participation in the group experience.

Entry Requirements

  • A willingness to participate in a psychotherapeutic group experience.
  • An ability to maintain the confidentiality of the group.
  • The courage and desire to heal.

When does the workshop run and what does it cost?

The workshop will run in February 2010, date tba. Arrival time will be 10.00pm Friday and departure time 3.00pm Sunday.

The workshop costs £230.00 including all food and refreshments. A non-returnable deposit of £75.00 is required at the time of booking. You will be able to arrange a payment plan for the remainder of the workshop fee and Chris Brown will call you to arrange this with you on receiving your booking form and deposit.
