Supporting the Delivery of Ethical, Safe and High-Quality Counsellor Training
Introduction
LC&CTA’s quality assurance framework is designed to ensure that students are supported throughout their training journey whilst maintaining the highest standards of ethical, professional and safe counselling practice.
The framework recognises that developing counsellors requires more than academic achievement. Students must demonstrate appropriate knowledge, skills, reflective capacity, ethical awareness and professional responsibility before progressing towards independent practice.
Quality assurance is therefore embedded throughout the entire student journey.
1. Admissions and Selection
Purpose:
- To ensure applicants understand the commitment required and demonstrate the potential suitability to undertake counselling training.

2. Student Expectations and Professional Responsibility
Purpose:
- To ensure students understand the standards expected of trainee counsellors from the beginning of training.

Quality Assurance Focus:
- Establishing clear expectations regarding ethics, behaviour, respect, responsibility and professional development.
3. Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Purpose:
- To ensure students develop the required knowledge and counselling skills through structured learning and robust assessment.

Quality Assurance Focus:
- Ensuring assessment decisions are fair, consistent, evidence-based and reflect the expected Level 5 standard.
4. Student Development and Progression
Purpose:
- To ensure progression decisions consider the whole student journey rather than academic achievement alone.

5. Placement Learning and Client Practice
Purpose:
- To ensure students gain appropriate practical experience within safe and supportive environments.

- Ensuring client welfare, appropriate practice and student development remain central.
6. Supervision and Reflective Practice
Purpose:
- To ensure students develop safe, ethical and reflective counselling practice.

Quality Assurance Focus:
- Using supervision as a safeguard, developmental tool and mechanism for professional accountability.
7. Safeguarding and Professional Suitability
Purpose:
- To ensure concerns affecting clients, students or professional standards are recognised and managed appropriately.

8. Complaints, Feedback and External Review
Purpose:
- To ensure concerns are managed fairly and provide opportunities for learning and improvement.

9. Annual Review and Continuous Improvement
Purpose:
